Il ramo di Al-Qaeda in Iraq ha probabilmente effettuato i recenti attentati suicidi in Siria e ha infiltrato le forze di opposizione che combattono il regime del presidente Bashar al-Assad, lo ha detto ieri sera il capo dello spionaggio statunitense.
Gli attentati a Damasco e ad Aleppo da dicembre “avevano tutte le caratteristiche di un attacco in stile al-Qaeda,” James Clapper, direttore della National Intelligence, ha detto alla Commissione del Senato dei Servizi segreti militari.
“E così crediamo che al-Qaeda [presente] in Iraq, stia estendendo la sua portata in Siria“, ha detto.
I suoi commenti hanno confermato i rapporti nei quali i funzionari americani sospettavano la mano di al-Qaeda dietro gli attentati e fa seguito un recente messaggio video dal leader di al-Qaeda, Ayman al-Zawahiri, in cui si approva la rivolta contro il regime di Assad.
Il vice ministro degli interni irakeno ha detto ad AFP questo mese che al-Qaeda stava muovendo armi e militanti dall’Iraq in Siria.
Il signor Clapper ha espresso la preoccupazione che militanti di Al-Qaeda si fossero inseriti all’interno della frammentata opposizione, in mezzo alla spirale di violenza che gli attivisti sostengono abbia provocato più di 6.000 morti dal marzo 2011.
“Un altro fenomeno preoccupante che abbiamo visto di recente, a quanto pare, è la presenza di estremisti che si sono infiltrati nei gruppi di opposizione. I gruppi di opposizione, in molti casi possono non essere consapevoli del fatto che sono lì“, ha detto.
Il segretario alla Difesa Leon Panetta, parlando in una conferenza stampa con il suo omologo tedesco, Thomas De Maiziere, ha fatto eco all’opinione del signor Clapper, ma ha dichiarato che l’influenza di al-Qaeda riguardo all’opposizione è rimasta poco chiara.
Alla domanda se Washington potrebbe sostenere le forze di opposizione data la presenza di al-Qaeda, Panetta ha detto: “Credo che il solo fatto che sia presente ci preoccupa. Mentre quale sia il suo ruolo, e quanto ampio sia, penso che rimanga da verificare“.
Mr Clapper ha detto che l’opposizione era profondamente frammentata e che il regime di Assad sembrava in grado di mantenere il potere per il momento, mentre si procedeva con la repressione violenta delle proteste.
Ha aggiunto che non vi fosse traccia del fatto che la situazione di stallo sarebbe finita presto.
Mr Clapper ha anche detto che agenzie di intelligence statunitensi stavano monitorando “l’estesa rete” delle scorte di armi chimiche della Siria, che ha detto rappresentano una sfida più grande dell’arsenale libico, prima della caduta del dittatore Muammar Gheddafi.
“Anche se fino a questo momento, e noi stiamo le stiamo osservando con molta attenzione, sembrano essere al sicuro“, ha detto.

Al-Qaeda’s branch in Iraq likely carried out recent suicide bombings in Syria and has infiltrated opposition forces fighting President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, the US spy chief said last night.

Bombing attacks in Damascus and Aleppo since December “had all the earmarks of an al-Qaeda-like attack,” James Clapper, Director of National Intelligence, told the Senate Armed Services Committee.
“And so we believe al-Qaeda in Iraq is extending its reach into Syria,” he said.
His comments confirmed earlier reports that US officials suspected al-Qaeda’s hand in the bombings and follows a recent video message from al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri in which he endorses the uprising against Assad’s rule.

Iraq’s deputy interior minister told AFP this month that al-Qaeda was moving guns and militants from Iraq into Syria.
Mr Clapper voiced concern that Al-Qaeda militants had inserted themselves inside a divided opposition amid the spiraling violence that activists say has left more than 6,000 people dead since March 2011.
“Another disturbing phenomenon that we’ve seen recently, apparently, is the presence of extremists who have infiltrated the opposition groups.
“The opposition groups in many cases may not be aware that they’re there,” he said.
Defence Secretary Leon Panetta, speaking at a news conference with his German counterpart, Thomas De Maiziere, echoed Mr Clapper’s view but said al-Qaeda’s influence on the opposition remained unclear.
Asked if Washington could support opposition forces given al-Qaeda’s presence, Panetta said: “I think just the fact that they’re present concerns us. As to what their role is, and how extensive their role is, I think that remains to be seen.”
Mr Clapper said the opposition was deeply fragmented and that the Assad regime appeared able to hold on to power for the moment as it pressed ahead with the violent repression of protests.
He added there was no sign the stalemate would end anytime soon.
Mr Clapper also said US intelligence agencies were monitoring Syria’s “extensive network” of chemical weapon stockpiles, which he said presented a bigger challenge than Libya’s arsenal did before the fall of dictator Muammar Gaddafi.
“Although to this point, and we’re watching these very carefully, they appear to be secure,” he said.
